This isnt one of the best books of all time but it is a very good one. 9/10While its not exactly a new idea the concept of the mechanical (AI) man works well in the steampunk setting. Being based in the early 1900s also lends credence to the expansion of the empire and the status of mechanical men as the ultimate weapon, something which would be very difficult in a modern nuclear world.I didn’t enjoy the religious aspects of the book but i understand that was the way of it at the time and the book didn’t try to sell anything. The characters are not all mechanical and the interplay between governments is interesting too.The pace is steady with plenty of action. The characters are not perhaps as well fleshed as they could be but they are far from 1d.There is some violence and some sex, along with swearing, but i would be happy to recommend this book to ages 12 and up….

I really did not enjoy this book. After reading his previous series set during the 2nd world war which I absolutely loved (Milkweed). I really did not identify with the mechanical’s nor any of the people in the plot….

Original idea, well written, great character development. 4 stars: too short, needed more…felt like a movie script….
